The situation
A retired engineer was approached through a professional-looking trading platform that promised consistent double-digit monthly returns on Bitcoin. Over eleven weeks he deposited the equivalent of $45,000 in BTC across four transfers. When he tried to withdraw his “profits,” the platform demanded a 20% “release tax” and then stopped responding entirely.
By the time he contacted ALTHEON, the brokerage website had already changed its domain twice and his account dashboard — which had shown a balance of more than $90,000 — was inaccessible. He believed the money was gone for good.
What ALTHEON did
Our forensic team began with a full intake: wallet addresses, transaction hashes, deposit timestamps, and every email and chat log the client still had. From there we built an on-chain trace of each Bitcoin transfer.
- Mapped all four outbound transactions to a cluster of consolidation wallets used by the fraud ring.
- Identified two regulated exchanges where the stolen BTC was converted to fiat — the critical choke point.
- Prepared an evidence package and filed coordinated requests with both exchanges’ compliance teams.
- Worked with the client’s bank and a cooperating payment processor to document the original purchase of the Bitcoin, establishing a clean ownership chain.
The outcome
Because the funds touched compliant exchanges before being cashed out, those platforms were able to freeze the portion still held in the suspect accounts. After a documented claim and a six-week review, $45,000 — the client’s full principal — was returned. The inflated “profit” figures were always fictional, so the principal was the realistic and achievable target from day one.
Why it worked
Speed and documentation. The client kept his transaction records, and we engaged the exchanges before the funds were fully dispersed. On-chain assets are far more recoverable than victims assume — the blockchain is a permanent ledger, and money laundering still has to pass through regulated on-ramps where it can be intercepted.
