Fake crypto brokers are among the most profitable scams operating today, precisely because they look so convincing. Polished websites, live-looking dashboards and attentive “account managers” are designed to lower your guard. Knowing the warning signs before you deposit a single dollar is the most effective protection you have.
1. Returns that are too consistent to be real
Markets move up and down. A platform that shows steady daily or weekly gains with almost no losses is not trading — it’s showing you a fabricated number on a screen. Guaranteed or “risk-free” returns are the single biggest red flag in investing.
2. Pressure to deposit more — especially to withdraw
The defining trait of a fake broker is the withdrawal trap. The moment you ask to take money out, a new fee appears: a “release tax,” a “liquidity fee,” an “anti-money-laundering deposit.” Legitimate platforms never require you to pay money in order to take your own money out.
3. Unverifiable licensing
Scam brokers frequently display a real regulator’s logo and licence number that actually belongs to a different, legitimate company — a tactic called a clone firm. Always look the number up directly on the regulator’s own website, and confirm the contact details match.
4. Contact that started with you being approached
- An unsolicited message on social media, a dating app or messaging platform.
- A “friend” or romantic interest who introduces you to an investment.
- Cold calls or ads promising mentorship into crypto wealth.
Almost no genuine investment opportunity begins with a stranger contacting you. If you didn’t go looking for it, be deeply skeptical.
5. Crypto-only payments and anonymous teams
If the platform only accepts cryptocurrency, lists no verifiable company address, and its “team” photos reverse-image-search to stock libraries, treat it as fraudulent.
What to do if you’re unsure
Before depositing, take a screenshot of the offer, the licence claims and the terms. If you’ve already paid and can’t withdraw, stop sending money immediately — paying the “release fee” never works. Preserve every transaction record and chat log; those documents are exactly what a recovery team needs to trace and pursue your funds.
