NFTs opened a new frontier for digital ownership — and a new frontier for fraud. Because transactions are irreversible and self-custodied, collectors are often their own last line of defence. These are the red flags that separate a safe mint from a costly mistake.
Malicious approval signatures
The most damaging NFT scam isn’t a fake artwork — it’s a fake transaction. A site asks you to “sign” what looks like a harmless message, but the signature actually approves the attacker to transfer your tokens. Always read what your wallet is asking you to approve, and reject anything granting blanket spending or transfer permissions.
Counterfeit collections and look-alike listings
- Verified-looking collections that copy a popular project’s art and name.
- Listings priced suspiciously low to trigger an impulse buy.
- Marketplaces or links shared by strangers in Discord or DMs.
Always reach collections through the project’s official, verified channels — never through a link someone sends you.
Fake mint and airdrop sites
Scammers spin up urgent “limited mint” or “claim your airdrop” pages, often after compromising a real project’s social account. Urgency is the manipulation: legitimate mints don’t require you to rush past your own judgement.
Customer-support impersonation
No genuine support team will ever ask for your seed phrase or private key. Anyone who does is trying to steal your wallet, full stop.
Protecting yourself
- Use a separate “burner” wallet for minting and experimenting.
- Regularly review and revoke token approvals.
- Bookmark official marketplace and project URLs.
- Slow down — urgency is a tactic, not an opportunity.
If your NFTs are stolen
Act immediately. Stolen NFTs leave a clear on-chain trail, and the faster a theft is reported to the relevant marketplaces and exchanges, the more likely the assets can be frozen or delisted before resale. Preserve the transaction hashes — they are the map a forensic team follows to trace and pursue your assets.
